[Primary & Middle School] Reading Week and Super Reader Contest 2024–2025: Reading Books Together

Date Submitted: 21/04/2025

For Sakura - Olympia students, books have become irreplaceable companions on the path of growth, shaping a beautiful reading culture within the school. The Reading Week and Super Reader contest were created to nurture this culture—offering not just a space for reading, but also for sharing, creating, and inspiring. Over the years, the program has always received enthusiastic participation from students across all grades.

In celebration of Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day (April 21, 2025), Olympia Primary, Middle and High School organized the Reading Week & Super Reader Contest 2024–2025 under the theme “Reading Books Together”. The program continued to bring exciting new challenges through a diverse range of activities designed to help students enhance their reading comprehension skills in engaging and inspiring ways. From individual tasks to collaborative projects such as Battle of the Books, Book Cover Design, and the Old Book Market, students were encouraged to explore new perspectives and express their creativity through books.

In addition, the 14-Day Family Reading Challenge created a meaningful opportunity for parents and children to read together, nurturing a reading culture through simple, everyday moments shared as a family.

14-Day Family Reading Challenge – A Journey of Connection Through the Pages

Reading Week at Olympia Primary, Secondary, and High School began with a heartfelt initiative: the 14-Day Family Reading Challenge. More than just a challenge, it was a warm invitation for families to spend intentional time together each day—reading, discovering, and sharing stories beyond the pages of a book.

Thirty minutes of daily reading has become a meaningful bonding time between parents and children.

Each day, students and their parents received a themed “reading mission” to spark curiosity and conversation: take a photo reading together, create a bookmark, quiz each other about a recently read book, write a letter to a character, read outdoors, and more. Parents became companions on the journey—storytellers, listeners, and friends—turning each interaction into a meaningful dialogue.

Students excitedly joined fun “reading missions” with their parents.

What truly matters isn’t how many pages are turned, but the quality of the connection they create. It's the proud moment when a child introduces their favorite book to their parents; the quiet pause when a parent is moved by their child’s reflections after a reading session. Personal stories become shared memories, and the habit of reading is nurtured through empathy, understanding, and love.

Although the 14-day challenge has ended, many families continue the beautiful habit of reading together.

A Joyful Week of Reading Activities That Brought the Love for Books to Life

During Reading Week at Olympia, the reading culture extended well beyond the classroom. It flourished in every part of the school—from the sunlit courtyard and the shaded schoolyard to the inviting corners of each classroom and the shelves of the library.

Under golden sunlight and swaying trees, the schoolyard transformed into an ideal “reading station” during every break time. Children gathered in circles, each holding their favorite book with care. Their eyes sparkled with focus, their voices filled with excitement as they retold stories—sowing quiet but powerful seeds of a lifelong reading habit in the most natural, gentle, and heartwarming way.

Bathed in sunlight and shaded by green trees, the schoolyard became a perfect reading spot for SOers.

No less engaging, the library became a favorite meeting point during free periods, a place where students freely chose the worlds they wished to explore. From these moments of quiet inspiration, many ideas for the first round of the Super Reader competition were sparked and brought to life.

Creative ideas were nurtured and brought to life in the library.

In classrooms, reading-inspired creative activities took on vibrant forms. One highlight was the shadow puppet storytelling show organized by secondary school students for their younger friends in primary school. With just a few recycled cardboard boxes, a flashlight, drawing paper, and a healthy dose of imagination, these young “directors” brought fairy tales to life in magical screenings. The room overflowed with laughter, wonder, and awe. Though simple, the “mini cinema” created lasting memories—where books weren’t just read with the eyes, but felt with the heart and shared between generations of Olympia students.

The mini shadow puppet show brought waves of laughter during Reading Week.

Adding even more excitement were two creative reading challenge sessions that sparked lively participation and teamwork. From brain-teasing quizzes and character-matching games to bookmark design challenges, students eagerly took on each task, collecting stickers as special tickets to exchange for thoughtful prizes during the Super Reader Final Day. More than just rewards, they were tokens of joy and celebration for an unforgettable journey into the world of books.

SOers enthusiastically took on creative book challenges to earn stickers for gifts at the Super Reader finale.

The gift-exchange stickers—powerful golden tickets—were the most sought-after rewards of Reading Week.
